Published 12 May 2021

On 8 May 2021, the Australian Government announced that people holding a temporary visa in Australia who are working, or intending to work, in the tourism and hospitality industry will be able to apply for the 408 COVID-19 visa. This is aimed to help Australia recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Government has not indicated a date as to when this change will be implemented.

Currently the legislation allows people to lodge an application for the 408 COVID-19 visa within 28 days before their visa expires or within 28 days after their visa expired. However, the change mentioned above will allow tourism and hospitality workers to lodge an application for the 408 COVID-19 visa up to 90 days before their visa expires. The visa can be granted with a validity period of up to 12 months.
